Dear Friends,
 
If you're reading this email the day we sent it out, than today is Election Day!  And as the day draws to an end, we wait with the anticipation to read tomorrows headlines, declaring our new President.
 
We've been bombarded with an unprecedented number of promotional ads by each candidate and their supporters.  We've been blasted with fair AND opinionated news. And we've been promised a wide range of benefits from each.
 
Getting specific, the promises that each candidate has made about improving our healthcare system are not likely to happen exactly as proposed. A series of revisions is likely to make either candidate's proposal more palatable for Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals alike, so it can pass into law.
 
The WSJ recently did a summary type comparison of the candidates' positions on a variety of topics. Let's recount the comments made about the two healthcare proposals.
 
To set the stage, a non-partisan health policy group projected that the average family will spend about $4,400 in 2010 for health insurance. Both candidates have stated that they want to expand access to health insurance coverage and make it affordable!  But this is where the agreement ends.
 
Candidate Obama proposes income related subsidies for health insurance through some type of national exchange that would also expand access to Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Plans. He would mandate that employers either provide health coverage to employees or contribute a percentage of payroll toward a national plan. Certain small employers would be exempt from making payments.
 
Candidate McCain wants to replace the current income tax exemptions for health insurance premiums paid by employers with a tax credit of $5,000 per family ($2,500 for individuals). Anyone denied coverage would be able to apply to a state-run, high-risk insurance pool, administered by private insurers. In addition, he would allow people to cross state lines to apply in other states that have more appealing plans.
 
So there you have it!
 
Will any of this come to pass? Leading experts agree that while no proposal is likely to pass as initially designed, an overwhelming increase in public pressure is likely to force the hand of our politicians to make some significant changes.
 
Will anything change in the next four years, or even in our lifetime?
